Our Story

Mady and Jody met in June of 2023. After following each other on social media, Jody reached out to Mady to ask her who did her hair. With classic Mady enthusiasm, she responded "I DO! Want me to do yours?! I'll do it free!" In a couple of weeks, Mady visited Barefoot Acres and did Jody's hair under the barn's lean-to, toured the farm, and a friendship was born.

Both Jody and Mady are first generation farmers. Jody grew up in Connecticut while Mady grew up in the urban part of Pennsylvania. Neither of these women had any experience when they began their respective farms, but knew it was the path for them. Once finding each other it was clear that competition was not in their vocabularies. With compassion and communication, the beginnings of their collaboration were born.

What once was helping each other with a couple baskets of veggies here and there then turned into a flourishing flower business and has now become its final form in Urban Roots Collective.
